The startups solving what policy can't
Greece is spending €2.5B on water infrastructure, but contamination, energy costs and brine waste need private tech. Four global water startups that could help, and why no Greek startup is deploying them locally.

What we covered in the past two weeks:
Week 1: the water crisis (50% leak rates, 85% agriculture use, empty reservoirs)
Week 2: the government's €2.5B plan (smart meters, Evrytos, island desalination)
This week: the innovators solving what policy can't alone.
Hand-picked startups
1. AquaPoro (USA/Jordan) – Harvesting water from thin air
Actively raising – seed round
Problem: islands like Kastellorizo, Kimolos, and Symi have no local freshwater. They rely on expensive water tankers (€10–12/m³).
Tech: MOF materials (molecular 'sponges') + novel reactor design to harvest water from air, even at ~20% humidity. Solar-powered, no grid connection.
Impact: off-grid systems for homes, commercial, and municipal scale (~50,000L/day), powered by solar. Unlike desalination: works anywhere, produces zero brine waste.
Greece: although more expensive than desalination per m³, AWH will be cheaper and more flexible than water ships. Some Greek hotels are already piloting AWH systems via MP-Energy.
2. Xatoms (Canada) – Cleaning contaminated water with quantum chemistry
Just closed $3M pre-seed – Genesis Ventures, among others
Problem: saltwater intrusion + pesticide pollution make existing water unusable.
Tech: AI + quantum chemistry to discover molecules (or 'photocatalysts') that purify polluted water using visible light (e.g. solar).
Impact: removes "forever chemicals" (PFAS), pharmaceuticals, pesticides. Works on camping filters → municipal systems.
Greece: ~1,500 km² of aquifers are contaminated by saltwater intrusion (larger than Athens). This water is currently unusable and could take 50–600 years to recover. Xatoms' molecules can make this water usable again.
3. Aestuarium (Netherlands) – Bioengineered bacteria for desalination pre-processing
Just closed first round – Rockstart AgriFood Fund, Jan 2026
Problem: desalination is energy-intensive.
Tech: bioengineered bacteria for desalination pre-treatment that reduce the energy demand of standard RO plants by up to 80% and lower costs by 50%.
Impact: carbon negative process (bacteria absorb atmospheric CO₂ to grow), efficient, scalable to industrial/municipal scale.
Greece: 35 new desal plants are being built across Greece, which if paired with Aestuarium's tech could cut electricity costs by 80% while removing carbon from the atmosphere.
4. Hydratico (Poland/Ukraine) – Low energy, compact desalination
Problem: traditional desalination = high energy cost + massive brine waste.
Tech: forces 65°C water through narrow jets at high speed, creating steam bubbles that naturally separate salt, coined 'supercavitation'.
Impact: 10x less energy than reverse osmosis (the industry standard). Reduces brine waste by 90%. Each container-sized module can produce 100m³/hr (8x smaller than competitors).
Greece: already piloted in mining wastewater (Ukraine) + municipal treatment (Poland). Perfect for Greek islands needing fast, mobile, low-energy desalination. Can modernise existing plants or deploy new units in weeks.
Where are the Greek water tech startups?
Greece has:
Established engineering firms (Sychem, Dialynas) doing great work on desalination
Research projects (HYDROUSA, funded by EU grants)
Service companies (VODA.ai, founded by a Greek, but now US-based)
But venture-backed, scaling Greek water tech startups? I haven't found any.
The call:
Do you know a Greek founder working on water tech?
Do you know a researcher with IP sitting in a lab?
Do you know businesses that need these technologies (utilities, municipalities, F&B, etc.)?
The tech exists globally. That's in part what this platform is for.
Greece needs local champions to adapt + deploy it.
Closing thoughts
Greece is building €2.5B in infrastructure. The world has the tech (AquaPoro, Xatoms, Aestuarium, Hydratico).
The gap? No one is connecting them locally.
That's a €2.5B+ market opportunity for a Greek founder.
